Why Conservative Savers Keep Paper Reserve Logs Beside Cold Storage
The case for handwritten documentation in a hardware-wallet world
When you buy a hardware wallet, the manufacturer gives you a device and recovery instructions. What they do not provide is a framework for explaining why you hold specific addresses, how those addresses relate to your retirement timeline, or what a family member should do if you are unavailable.
That gap is where reserve logs earn their place on your shelf.
What a reserve log records
A reserve log is not a transaction ledger. It does not track daily buys and sells. Instead, it documents:
- Which devices hold which address ranges
- The purpose of each allocation (retirement, gift, emergency)
- Where recovery materials are stored, described without exposing seed phrases in plain text
- The sequence a heir should follow to access funds responsibly
Conservative savers—those who acquired Bitcoin or Ethereum years ago and intend to hold for decades—benefit most because their holding period outlasts any single software interface.
Paper survives vendor changes
Apps shut down. Firmware updates change menu layouts. A paper binder with dated entries does not require a login, an update, or a company that still exists in 2045.
We have met clients whose only record of a 2016 paper wallet was a screenshot on a phone they no longer own. A reserve log would have cost them an afternoon to create and saved weeks of anxiety.
How to start without overcomplicating
Begin with one page per wallet. Write the purchase date, device model, and a plain sentence about its role in your plan. Cross-reference an address prefix—not the full key—so you can verify the right device later.
If you share a household, agree on naming conventions before filling pages. Mixed Korean and English labels are fine; inconsistency is not.
When to seek help
Some savers prefer a guided first session to establish structure. Others maintain logs independently and visit us annually for review. Either path works—the important part is that the record exists and someone besides you can read it.
Our retirement reserve consultation covers initial setup in a single three-hour session.
